This project requires transforming and renovating the existing site (in this case, level 2 of building B at the Monash University Caulfield campus) into a small cafeteria space under The Standing Room's new franchise, The Sitting Room.
Pitching on the idea of 'flow', the joinery and furniture are custom-made with mainly curvilinear forms and shapes to create a sense of flowing away with freedom from the hectic monotony and burdensome of work and school.
Rather than primarily using straight and rectilinear structures, we wanted to create a nice contrast to the heavy industrial look of the site by going with a more organic and natural use of material finishes and colors, while still keeping alignment with the existing aesthetics and qualities of the already-established brand franchise of the Standing Room.
Hence, a subtle hint of emerald green would be added onto the servery benchtop and kicker blending with the light neutral grey marble for the cabinetry and the warm wood materiality to create a nice gentle pop of refreshing and soothing color.
To further encapsulate the feeling of nature, the cafeteria would add some final finishing touches on the aesthetic with greenery boxes and floral pendant lights that would enlighten the space to be more refreshing and charming as if the patrons were walking into a mini enchanted garden.
