'Blossom' is a temporal scenographic installation for a 2-week event HRAFF (Human Rights Arts & Film Festival), hosted at the State Library of Victoria's Hansen Hall. The aim of this design proposes to transform into two different states, functioning as a daytime merchandise stall, and an evening night bar.
The idea behind the proposal envisions recreating a scene of a 'mushroom forest' inspired by the movie 'Alice from Wonderland' using the imagery of the colossal mushroom intertwining between the existing columns of the hall. The mushroom-like structure seeks to utilize the folding/unfolding mechanism of the umbrellas that share similarities in form and shape with the former. The proposal includes two main supporting components: one spiral canopy that vertically expands and contracts as a mushroom's cap and one box shelf that the joinery hinge allows to open/close into a standing table at night as a mushroom's stalk.
The main component of the design, the spiral canopy, is made with lightweight Tyvek that is laser-cut according to the quartered curved path of a kirigami. The structure will also be equipped with an OLED that will illuminate into a glowy semi-private dome when the sun goes down.
